I think it's the weather =))) The weather gets to people, sometimes it can be very harsh... =/ For instance here in the US, Seatle (Washington) has got the highest suicide rate b/c of the gloomy weather, people get depressed.
I think one of the reasons why Filipino men are romantic b/c of the Spaniards. Most are poor (population), therefore they have to be creative in romancing/courting the girls. That would be my intellectual guess.
