GG Bridge --- Leaving SF.

1st Major Point --- Avenue of the Giants, the majestic Redwoods (about 32 miles).

Our voiture went through this tree --- massive!

My silly "lil" brother, Rej.

We tried to stop him but to no avail; he wanted to go up there.

Nature is amazing.

I am always in awe of it.

Wading to cool off.

I heart rivers. Saw tons of it on the way up.

One of my favorite cars --- 1950s truck model.

Saw this in this little town called Miranda.

Someday, I'd like to buy one and spruce it up (i first fell in love with it when i saw Aidan driving a beautiful green one, from one of the SITC episodes).

We drove, via Highway 101, North. It's by the coast.

The views are striking, yet calming.

We are nearing the California/Oregon border.

Oregon.

The drive to Crater Lake, Oregon.

And... my beautiful Family =)))

We were there until the 4th.

Saw the towns (Ashland, Oregon; where we ended up) 4th of July parade.

I love small town gatherings.

It has more charming characteristics, than big cities.

Last Christmas.

Since we haven't really had the time to chat too much lately
I thought maybe it would a nice idea to show you how the
silly season went by here in sunny Australia.

Let's start with Christmas - my absolute fave holiday!

I was right into it from day one with my elfin hat from the
two dollar shop at the fresh produce markets. Ho ho ho!

My mum had sent Christmas wishes on one of my favourite
cards so this one got to hang on our wall, lucky thing.

We had plentiful of food all day every day. Here some Finnish
chocolates, dried fruit and nut, ginger breads and green gooey
ballsy thingamajigs. Oh and a very random Subway cookie too!

Thanksgiving 2010

We decided to go away for Thanksgiving.

Initially, the plan was just to go to Oregon-Washington state.

We ended up in Vancouver, Canada and beyond.

We strolled. Ate. Laughed. Relaxed.

Interesting and a charming City.

Everything looked new, architecture-wise.

And the people were great.

Shops and boutiques were everywhere.

We ate in-between our destinations.

This was at Memphis Blues.

The southern style B-b-q here was fabulous!

And yes, the cold did not deter us from getting our cold treats =).

*my family loves their ice cream.

We went to Whistler.

I wanted to go skiing but my brother wouldn't come with me =/

So, last week was crazy. Just work and fun for anyone.
Luckily the weekend brought on some times that we will
not forget anytime soon. Like Jack Johnson. Live!

Everyone was looking so fabulous through my white wine
coloured eyes and the music sounded fabulous in my tired ears.

And yeah it was raining but see here, Elin barely noticed.

Although some of us were feeling a little we for wear..

..I was feeling great! So full of loving in my little heart. Yey.

We were whispering secrets to each other and I don't think
there is anything better than sitting next to your friend, leaning
over and whispering something in their ear, only to hear a giggle.

And Jack was BEAUTIFUL. So good. He donated all his ticket
profits to charity and that made our hearts beat even faster.

The day after we had some eggs on toast from the barbecue
in beach to help with the bit of wine still floating in our bellies.

Who doesn't like Hugs & Kisses?

I'm not a fan of anything mass-produced and corporate-made, esp. when it comes to food. But I DO make an exception now and then.

Hershey's Hugs and Kisses, have always been a cheap favorite when I'm craving for something chocolate-y.

I'm not fond of Hershey's Dark Chocolate or Milk Chocolate, but like in many social situations, I generally can never say no to Hugs and Kisses.

The combination of the outside white chocolate with milk chocolate stripes, and the milk chocolate inside, is addicting!

Perfect combination.

Although, you can't beat Hershey's Milk Chocolate in S'mores =). That's another exception.

ps: if you can't find them in AUS. and you'd like to taste 'em, let me know =). and i'll fed ex you some.

I've been itching to make Chicken Barley Soup for quite some time now.

So, since I wasn't feeling so hot [when i made this], I decided to call M's Mum and asked for her recipe.

It wasn't difficult, tho' a bit time consuming.

Ingredients.

Stalk and leaves of celery.

Parsley

Barley

Rutabaga

Carrots, Onion, and Turnips.

Green Beans.

Zucchini.

I also added some peas.

the result...?

Tada!

Halloween.

I have had some Swedish guests over for about two weeks and
we have had some very very fun times but for some reason they
had completely missed out on the finest thing here in Western
Australia - the sunset. So we hoped for a pre-party for Halloween
with some magical golden rays.

And that is exactly what we got! Plus some hammock time. Bless.

My Swedish guests were delighted and very very excited.

So was ol' mate. Here with his favourite La Parka mask! You know,
from the Mexican wrestling series of Lucha Libre.

Although I don't think anyone was as stoked as this guy. We had
to tell him to settle down several time as he started to get out of
hand. Oh and all that pipe smoke. Phew!

Someone had bought these incredible little coulour palettes that
we ended up painting ourselves with. Mostly blood and guts.

Elin was 'another bloody tourist' and we had obviously cut open
her throat.

The main thing was also to try and look really scary. Boo!

But not this kitten. All she did was purr in the corner.

And here is my favourite lady, Kate. She was 'a girl who got her
heart ripped out'. You would all truly love her.

Then we were off to a Brazilian pool party but that is a whole new
stories that one.

Tarp surfin' in the sun.

Thirty degrees, the first rays of the summer sun light and
a flat spell taking over the ocean. What not to do than buy
a massive tarpaulin and get on it! Friends and some cold
drinks are quite mandatory too.

Such mega fun! Know I know what I will be doing for the rest
of the summer. (Other than traveling to Hong Kong of course.)

I want to show mine too!
Here are a couple of things that I was able to find while
rummaging through the fairly rancid selection at my
local op-shop and also a lovely result of a beautiful
garage sale on the prettiest street of Perth.

A dress from the label 'Lovers' for five dollars and
a lovely white blouse for two little dollars.
(Oh and AUD is one to one with USD now. Crazy.)

Pretty lil' thing perfect for all this summers barbecues.

A pocket-y darling just right for anything in the Australian
summer heat.

For example a dinner with friends! Paired with bow tie of
course. We ate pumpkin risotto and chocolate fondue for
anyone who is interested. It was more-ish!

Girls surf trip.

1.

First wake up early in the crack of dawn to pack the car full of
giggling yet tired girls along with beach towels, sun screen,
sun glasses, water, surf boards and beverages. Hit the road
and watch the sun rise!

2.

Arrive at surf spot and make a crazy mess of all boards that
need to be waxed. Of all wetsuits that need to be put on and
smile. Big!

3.

Hit the surf but don't forget your sun screen mama as
the hole in the atmosphere has pity for no one. Surf
for as long as your legs can bare. Then drag your
tired body back onto the beach only to bury yourself
in the newly washed beach towel.

4.

Pack the car again and have some cold cider on the
sand before heading off to lunch while waiting for
best post-beach hair to develop just in time for the
evenings adventures awaiting in the city.

Such beautiful little things these organic produce.
From my man's collegue who has a hobby farm where
chicken and geese run around free and where herbs
grow wild in the sun.

So small too these ones that the egg disappeared in
my egg cup this morning. Plonk! I had to stick my nose
down and look for it in there while wondering how on
Earth that happened. Then it dawned on me that why
of course these little natural things have never seen
a day of spraying or a single hormone put into them,
making them tiny and oh so cute.

And the taste! So delicious.

A few weeks ago, I've become an official fan.

I'm in high spirits when my team (SF Giants) wins

and I'm dismayed when they lose.

I like it; I usually don't watch sports on TV

(i prefer to watch sports live).

It helps also that the SF Giants are winning most of their games

---they are in the pennant race.

Don't you just love the feeling of the weekend?
I do! (You know I do.) I think my surroundings
are suddenly dressed up in this pink hue that is
obviously completely ripped apart by the next
arriving Monday morning but just for that one
day. All pink.

To embrace that I bought flowers. Fresh.
From the market and oh so pretty. But
boy are they smelly too! How on Earth
did that happen and why did I not smell
them before I bought them?

For some reason even hanging up laundry
seems lovely. It is quite summery outside
nowadays and as the forty degree heat has
not hit us yet it is possible to actually go
outside and you know..hang out.

But then he said to me that I should just lie down
and he would make breakfast this time. So under
my nans rug and crept for some quality time with
tv reruns on my computer.

Later after being called to the kitchen I
received my piece of fresh gluten free
rosemary bread with sunflower seeds.

Fresh coffee (always), juice and a vegetarian
English breakfast with beans and egg whites.

Then some fruit!

Oh yeah and he had some sort of a meat
festival with a lot of tomato sauce.
Nom nom.

Then with my belly full I was off to a meet up
with the girls at a local beach side coffee shop
for some more fresh java and possibly even the
latest goss.

Hello panda!
Sourced from the local Asian grocers dangerously close to
the city. These Meiji made panda babies are full of delicious
pink strawberry goodness that basically melts in your mouth.

But not only that as they are incredibly cute too.
Have a look at golf panda will ya! So lovely that
little fellow. And I am not sure if they are of
Japanese origin these guys but just looking at them
makes my insides scream KAWAII!

And I always make sure not to turn over the
package as the behind holds the dirty secret
to the divine tastyness of these little creatures.
5' ribonucleatide anyone?

She broke through the music industry in the 60s.

The 60s is one of my favorite era.

J-town and the 'Mish w/ Rej

Went for an early dinner with Rej in J-town.

Had a huge bowl of Ramen at J-Town.

Glad, he liked it.

Then I took him to this place called New People.

In this building, there's a Cinema (where they show old Japanese movies); art gallery; artsy paper and things; and a clothing store.

For dessert, I took him to 'Mish (short for Mission).

We had coffee and shared a slice of Banana Cream Pie --- I fin'ly found my pie!

They have great Pies and not to mention community spirit (they are involve in SF's youth advocacy).

Weekend hands.

Some pictures from my kitchen this one sunny afternoon in
the suburb of ours that so vigorously follows the coastline.

Now, according to our recent theme of good food I am off to
an Asian grocer where my mission is to find a mortar, some
sushi ingredients for our election party tonight (big, big thing)
and also these amazing Japanese crackers that my colleague
introduced me to. And I can hear you asking what sort but it's
really hard to describe. Fine, I will try -phiff- they are round
and quite salty, about the size of your palm and also covered
in some sort of frosting. Sounds strange I know but they are
more-ish! Wish me luck.

Sewing Machine & the Lady.

Her name is Marisa Lynch, her story is a bit like Julie, from Julie & Julia the movie (which is where she acquired the idea).

She got laid off, and instead of moping about her situation, she decided to "Transform 365 unattractive frocks in 365 days, for $365." (Yahoo)

Marisa's current stat: 104 days to go and $105 left.

Hapa Ramen @ Fort Mason, SF

I was able to fin'ly go and check out Off The Grid (street food carts coming together) last Friday.

Yes, it is what it is in the photo --- cold and windy, such a drag! But that did not deter me from going and enjoying the scene and the food =). They have live music, drinks, and great foods =).

They have different vendors every Friday. But my sole reason for going was to taste Hapa Ramen bowl of noodles.

I got the Slow Cooked Pork Ramen Bowl.

They do offer vegetarian ramen noodle, the Miso Market Bowl.

The greens (chard and green beans) were perfectly cooked.

The egg was slow-cooked and super delicious!

The braised pork was tender, juicy and flavorful.

But... the only component that was a letdown was the salty broth =/ Yups, it was a tad salty (even for can't-help-salt crazy like me), otherwise, everything was great. Barely tasted the "flavor between delicate-sweet-dashi and rich-fatty-porky." (haparamensf.com) Must have been bad timing.

I will give them another try...

My Path to Ramen Enlightenment

Lately, I have been in search of the BEST ramen in the City.

So far, my search has led me to some awesome findings and tasty treats.

There's this place called Suzu, Noodle House in Japantown. And I think their noodles are to die for! Chewy, great texture, and homemade.

Below is the Spicy Mabo Ramen (tofu, crumpled tasty pork, boiled egg, and green onion).

Lol! I guess I was sooo hungry that I forgot to take a photo of this ramen at Oyaji in the Inner Richmond.

It was not great, but decent. I came to this place in particular b/c I heard that the broth of their ramen was fresh tasting and didn't have that weird MSG taste.

I thought otherwise, it was good but not the best.

Izakaya Sozai in the Sunset, I heard/read that this place makes one of the best ramen dishes.

Now... in comparison to the broth (pork) in Suzu and Oyaji, this one is the best.

Fresh and tasty, simply delish!

And the cha-su (roasted pork slice), I've never had anything like it. Didn't have that weird taste, it was tender, juicy, and no chemical taste. For the first time, I actually ate my cha-su, instead of shoving it aside.

The family is just getting into camping (nothing is ever too late).

A few weeks ago, we went to Clearlake, Ca. About a few hours from SF.

Although, I'm a bit ashamed to say that I didn't really go "camping" - lol!

I slept in a hotel.

This is Clearlake.

The fisherman in the family, Nathan.

I wasn't allowed to fish b/c I apparently needed a permit =/

They caught a few crayfish.

We went hiking.

Made and ate s'mores --- delish!

You can never go wrong with s'mores.

We went kayaking.

Rej did most of the paddling... =)

I have gone bazumckhaz over food lately so I decided that this week
should be ALL about food. Whatever food you are having,
where you are having it, who you are having it with and where
did you find inspiration to do that.
This I decided while eating my second dinner of muesli and yogurt
while cruising the web visiting some of the most delightful foodie blogs out there. I need more. My body needs more.
So I am treating this pretty much like a little exercise to moi as well.
I'm thinking something in the lines of..how 'bout you care a little?
Or does that not make sense?
What I mean is that in these times of obvious stress and
overworking of ourselves we need to have some good times.
Some food times.
And by the end of this Dibadaba week I want everyone,
exactly everyone, to think out loud 'Oh boy was that a feast!'.

Oh summer in my heart forever and ever.

So I am back. Yeah. It is winter here in Perth which I am not so
fond of so in order to stay calm and in my senses I thought it might
be a good idea to hang onto my good summer vibrations that I oh
so carefully collected in Finland. Here we go.

1. boating

Here is my dad with the boat. He is simply the best. And always
up for a little bit of boat action.

As an honorary summer guest I get to wear the captain's hat. Or
the red Cousteau beanie that is. But it is also a little hommage to
my old professor Erik Hallberg who is a very inspiring man who
qould never ever step on a boat without wearing one of these.
And yeah we all know that it worked for Jacques too.

My mum and dad, they are just the best.

Finnish summer scenery..

..what's not to love. So pretty it breaks my little heart.

Here I have taken a photo of a teensy incident where my dad sort
of wanted to show me these new cruise ships but instead almost
ended up being driven over by one. Not quite what we were looking
for but hey all was still good and the sun was shining.

After about two hours out at sea we finally boarded on the jetty
and was happily greeted by the sauna at the sea. Hey hey sailor.

Followed by a weeny climb up to the humble abode that is my
family's casa around the year and mine during the summers.
Pretty don't you think?

After the boat ride the captain looked a tad shattered but nothing
that a glass of wine could not fix. And anyway that is simply what
one gets from hanging at the very nose of the boat, leaning over
into the wind and enjoying like a true blue boat hound.

I have become obsessed with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Indeed so obsessed that one day I just had to Google them and
here are some of the fun facts I found on our lovely friend,
the all too soft and yet saucy PB&J:

* A 2002 survey showed the average American will have eaten 1,500 of these sandwiches before graduating from high school.

* Sometimes people put two layers of peanut butter.

* Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth.

And this is how I make mine:

First I toast some gluten-free organic bread, followed by a thick layer of almond butter which I truly love very crunchy and salty then finally I smear on some organic raspberry jam. Yum yum yum.

I would also like to dedicate my love to this sandwich because she normally saves all my oh so gruesome days at a job that sometimes seizes to inspire me. Thanks PB&J!

Friday night mama on the town.

Friday saw me having the worst day at work since the beginning
of my kind. I was quite ready to give up but then managed to throw
a few things into my brand new bag before jumping on a bus that
would take me on adventures instead of a lonely night of misery.

I barely made it but well on the ol' bus I started thinking how much
I actually missed the times of my youth just catching the random
bus to a house party of some kind with music flowing through my
ears and my heart full of expectations and excitement.

After an hour and a half in the public transport hell and a full
playlist I finally found my way here. To the Basement.

That's where I found some of my new friends.
Squished on a sofa somewhere in the corner surrounded by young
indie boys on long skinny legs that can barely carry their heavy souls
and pretty girls donning the loveliest of dresses from the sixties.
But in the end everyone was feeling Ms Friday and her happy ways.

We played some games..

..had some laughs..

..as well as some little huggies.

I felt like a fish in the water..

..but it didn't really show in these head shots.
Note to self: even the prettiest of dresses WILL be ruined by
ugly squirrel faces. Don't do them.

The next morning I woke up happy to some fresh coffee a-roasting.

In the end I think the most important thing to remember is that if one
happens to be having the most horrible day imaginable then one needs
to seek out the comfort of some lovely friends in a dark
basement somewhere in the dodgy part of town.

At one point I was back in Finland. Living and loving and browsing
allmy ol' joints and the familiar streets. This one particular day I
kept finding these little love hearts sprinkled around the city.
I thought it was wonderful.

Mostly I hung out with my beautiful friends and had lovely dinners.
Here we are having some Chicken Coriander at our favourite local
bistro Bar 9. My best friend Frigitte had such wonderful nails that day.
Tres parisienne!

We spent a lot of time in pubs too mind you. Just chatting away.

Sometimes I drew love hearts in the windows as I felt so in love
with all my friends who I only get to see every once in a while.

One weird night..

..needs to be balanced off with some long walks in the forest.
Always wearing wrong shoes too!

My dad took me for some second hand shopping in this little town
called Borga quite close to my house. I found some jackets that he
was kind enough to pay and later my mum dry cleaned them for me.
Now does that make me a spoiled brat?

Then we sat down on a sunny restaurant terrace and I ate some
gazpacho. My summer all-timer!

But before I could say 'favourite soup' I was whisked off to Thailand
in the arms of this hunk-y-dory.

There were sweet kittens everywhere and they were all called NoName!

And I must say that this picture from Thailand makes me look
extremely rattled. Which I probably was too. I tend to be that way
every time I leave my family and friends behind.

Oh well that's life I guess.

Here are snippets of what's to come from my Philippines Journey movie which I will upload soonish.

Places I visited:

We stayed in this native thatched hut in Uhaj (about 30-45mins by car from Banaue proper)

My super-cool travel buddies [from L-R: Janet, Bethanie, and Moi].

Good thing I had them... I knew from the get-go that this journey was going to be exhausting and emotional ---- sure enough, the inevitable happened...

I had a panic attack when I was leaving Bicol (the day before this photo was taken). It was the first time it ever happened to me... I think it was the combination of leaving something I was becoming familiar with all over again and leaving that for something that's totally unknown.

In retrospect, I think I was a bit overwhelmed by the scope of my itinerary.

For the next leg of my journey I wasn't sure if my companions were going to show up or flake on me. Plus, I was feeling sooo homesick [and lovesick] and exhausted.

I am super lucky that I had Mikey-Ike to call and cry on.

Seriously, the tears wouldn't stop streaming, no matter how hard I tried to stop them.

This is in Batad, where the famous amphitheater Rice Terraces are located.

This is Tappiyah Falls.

I don't know what it is... but I've always had this fascination with waterfalls.

Next destination: Sagada.

One of our many hikes through the rice terraces --- so surreal.

Thinking twice about the 'jump' (wait for the movie).

3rd destination: Baguio.

From this point on, I was solo.

I like El Nido: small town, clean, and quiet.

Those limestone cliffs are part of the Bacuit Islands; where I went island hopping and snorkeling.

I've been practicing and I am now a better swimmer =))) Lol!

The local beer - San Miguel Pale Pilsen. Pretty Good, I must say.

Sabang, Palawan. This is also where the Underground River Cave is located --- nature is amazing.

Next: Bohol.

This was the ferry to/fro Cebu and Bohol. The boat travel was about 2hours.

I was a bit nervous traveling by boat in the Philippines because of what I had heard and read in the news (ferry accidents), but during summertime the water is not rough and these boats are pretty modern, comfy, and clean.

This is the altar of Baclayon Church, which I will show more photos of later in the movie.

This is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines, built by the Spaniards in the 1500s.

My other fascination -- rivers!

Tourism like in many other parts of the world, has been the primary source of income for the locals here.

Cebu City, the second largest city in the Philippines.

I came here to see the historic sights: Magellan's Cross, Lapu Lapu's Shrine, etc... (which will be featured in the movie)

The famous White Beach in Boracay.

Lol! To be honest, this reminded me of Waikiki.

Tons of restaurants and hotels just a few steps away from the beach. Tons of tourists.

But the water is clean...

The Philippines have sooo much to offer. I wish and hope its locals would take care of it and know that they have a gem.

I didn't know these places I visited existed in the Philippines. So naive.

But there it was...

Now back to editing my movie...

Last night my friends and I went to this completely fabulous affair called 'Vintage Vixens Meet' and I bought a cape. But that is a whole other story as what I actually wanted to talk about today was the girls. All my beautiful little friends and a little thing we could not help but overhear last night.

Ok so the sun was going down and with our arms heavy of shopping bags we decided to get a quick relief in the form of a small wine and headed over to the pub. Just passing some table with a bunch of ol' Aussie diggers we feel them basically staring at us for what feels like a loooong time.
Suddenly one says:

"Look at all those different styles on all those girls.."
(obviously referring to our somewhat individual and eccentric clothes)

Then follows a long silence before one of them says:

"They are the Cadbury Allsorts!"

Now how cute is that?
I literally melted inside!
Oh and if I had a band I would definitely call it the Cadbury Allsorts.

Hello there pretty thing.

charity shop all by itself. A bit dusty on an old hanger.
And I just possibly could not leave it there in its misery
so I offered to take it home with me.

Bloody Mondays.

There is something so extremely devastating about Mondays.
Like today for instance as I woke up just to realize that the oh
so perfect weekend was over and another week had already begun.
How I hate when that happens!
I will always feel the new week lurking about but then I just close my
eyes and pretend like it is not really there only to be knocked on the
shoulder by it the next day.

recent Culinary Highlights

As my taster said, "these things had to be tasted to be believed. A chef can sometimes unwittingly create jaw-dropping versions of well-known standards and this was one of those times."

1) Arugula, carrots, red bell peppers, sliced pear, topped with Parmesan. Dressed in my own artisanal vinaigrette.

2) I have been craving this for ages.

Tuna Melt in toasted multi grain bread.

Ingredients: Wild caught, hand-packed, dolphin safe yellowfin tuna, balsamic vinegar, dill pickle (but I used chopped French Cornichons), mayonnaise, and old style dijon mustard. The original recipe [that I found online] called for shredded sharp cheddar cheese; I used sliced sharp cheddar cheese and pepper jack.

3) Allura's Asian Stir Fry --- small florets of Broccoli and firm tofu, stir fried in garlic chili oil.

4) Orzo, Asparagus, and Black Winter Truffle Butter.

This was heavenly.

The slightly sweet crunch of fresh asparagus. A hint of smokey black truffle. Mixed with al dente Orzo, topped with creamy parmesan and salty Pecorino.

Appalachian Trail with Bryson and Katz

Mikey-Ike recommended this book.

Quite a surprise. I think you'll like this one. It's non-fiction.

It's a about a man who sort of hiked the Appalachian Trail, which is approximately 2,178 miles, extending from Georgia to Maine.

This book will give you a nice taste of "America".

Nicely written, and it made me laugh out loud quite a few times.

Highly recommend this book.

After some compulsory yogic bending and surfing this morning
I finally made my way to the house and just died on the couch.
Three hours later I wake up still the same me but with a bleeding
ache in my throat. Fine I thought while pressing some lemons,
here you go you little mean bug you have no idea who you are
messing with. Then i shadow boxed a little while downing the
stuff followed by some pain killers.
And yeah after about half a day I still have a funny feeling throat
but at least I was able to show you my new garden and some new
shoes I bought for very little money the other day.

What I am trying to show here is my ever growing
lions mane filled with lovely sea salt crystals.
Possible fail.

Then the shoes. How good? Goldilocks needs her goldie shoes.

My garden! I am ever so proud of my green babies.

And here a little Friday hello before I head out
for some curing in the form of an Irish coffee.

Moving house.

to a real house.

Insatiable cravings --- cake run!

When Mikey-ike arrived, he told me about this particular cake.

As he was describing it to me, I was salivating and my head was screaming, "I want it now!"

I grabbed my canvas bag and off I went.

I only had 15 mins left before our grocery store closed.

I walked fast.

When I got to there, I immediately went straight to the pastry case.

I asked for it and I didn't care if it wasn't perfect (the side of the cake was brushed off, just a little bit).

I took the cake.

Just to make sure, I checked my bag if my wallet was in it...

... wah! Wallet? NOT inside! =/// Major headache coming on...

I looked at my phone, and I only had about 8 mins left, before they closed.

I thought for a sec.. and I decided that I could make it.

So, I ran and ran --- 8 sets of stairs!

I was huffing and puffing by the time I reached the apt.

I grabbed my bloody wallet and ran back to the store.

Running back to the store was much easier, but still... all for a cake?!

And to top it all off, at the same time, I was having major cramps...

But victory was MINE! I got there just in time! Lol!

Still had 3 mins left!

Phew!

Here is my PRIZE...

Once a month I have these mad cravings.

This time, it was this Strawberry Chiffon Cake.

I was huffing and puffing just to get a taste of this goodness.

Light, creamy icing--not-too-sweet.

White chiffon cake--airy but moist.

Fresh strawberries---sweet and succulent.

I patted myself on the back for my efforts and ate my cake.

It was worth it (until my next craving).

This months book for the book club is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. It is my pick for the month and I just wanted the club to continue with classics for a bit. I just chose something that I had heard much about but never read myself. I have not started on it yet though. Must scramble though this pile a bit first.
Lot's of Murakami (I am trapped) and some old favorites mixed with something new like the Guernsey Potato Peel Society. Oh and a heap of interior design magazines as we are just about to move house. And into a real house! Not a flat or a rundown unit but a house. With four whole rooms to fill with finds and love. Can't wait.

Me and My Java

Morning coffee at Tartine.

Perfect timing, usually this place is swarming with people--- people lined up out the door.

We came in just right on time...

It was nice just to talk and 'relax'.

And listening to Willie Nelson =) Most of the time they have cool tracks playing in the background.

I heart their scone---perfect texture and scrumptious.

Butter croissant is so-so... I think what's putting me off is its huge size.

OK so yeah I have this faiblesse for vintage hats which
we already knew about didn't we but the things is that
even old cats like me can learn new tricks.
So in order to prove that I learned how to use this fun
program on my computer that makes mini films.

These times of work and finding quiet.

This is where I sometimes work in the wine district.

Except that not much is done during the day and I just mostly
sit there drinking delicious coffee while reading gourmet magazines.

It is so pretty though with lots of roses, old wine barrels and horses.

I was trying to be a teeny weeny pretty but that is close to impossible
in this crazy heat that has surrounded us for the last three weeks.

After all that hard working (not really) I just wanted
to stay at home and take care of some important things
such as washing of my favorite new cardigans,
watering of my lovely red chillies and reading Donna Hay
food magazines. Yeah all I wanted was a little bit of peace and
quiet.

It's been difficult lately...

Little treats, like having lunch at our favorite coffee shop helps a bit.

For lunch, we went to Blue Bottle.

We had, of course, a cup latte.

Mikey-Ike had a mortadella sandwich (not pictured).

And I had this simple but delicious cheese sandwich.

And... We tried their mediocre cookies (but hey, as my Dad would say, "it's better than nothing").

The snickerdoodle tasted like artificial vanilla.

However, the chocolate cookie was a hit; perfect with our latte =)

Coffee Pot

We used to have this French Press (pictured below). But I lost one of nuts and bolts that holds the filter, mesh, and spiral together. =/ Had to chuck it.

Since it was worth having a French Press--- we decided to get another one. This time, we purchased this one (picture below). It's sturdy and reliable; we've had it for quite some time now.

Also, I don't have to worry about losing the nuts and bolts =)

But you know what I would love to find... is this...

After the quiet holiday weeks it was time to take the bull by its
horns and get back on the horse and all that. At least to shake
off that fake turkey as according to some 'love does not need handles'.
(Horrid.) So on Friday night we jumped in a bus, squeezed in there
with our pretty dresses and headed over to the Yacht Club for some
good ol' boogie.

Sitting in the bus felt like being back in school. Except that everyone
was way way hotter! No more braces, ugly hair or weird shoes a la mom.

And the Yach Club was beautiful in the evening sun.

So we drank some, danced some, threw away painful shoes, had
some gossips in the stairs and loved all night long. Until next day.

Me and my Java

We brew coffee using a French Press.

We get a pound of coffee beans from our local coffee shop to ensure freshness in our morning cup o' joe. We've tried several special kinds of coffee beans, but eventually we would go back to Peet's (local coffee shop). Decent price per/lbs and always fresh. We do not mess around =); pretty picky about our coffee.

*** I've been so preoccupied with planning my Philippines Trip --- trying to get it in order. Pretty sick and tired organizing it now. I just want it over and done (organizing).

I thought we could start this little thing called 'Me and my java'. It could be a little section with a photo of that specific roast followed by a tiny teeny story of what we were possibly thinking or eating or agonizing or oozing or whatever while drinking it.
What do you think?
I'll go first.

I like to drink my coffee, if having it at home, quite early in the morning. This one I had just before the sun had set and the air was still cool. It was just a normal blend with some soy milk and nothing else. I can't remember thinking anything much. Just feeling like it was going to be a good day. Maybe that was because I was using my favorite mug.

This was how my January 1st started...

Dinner with mi familia at Bouchon in Yountville --- up North.

Bouchon is listed on my Restaurant Must-To-Go list.

Started by famed French chef, Thomas Keller

So I was super excited to go...

I like the ambience of the restaurant.

It is an upscale-casual joint. Good thing we didn't have to dress up b/c we are not that sort of family; unless we have to, that is =)

Anyway, about the food...

For appetizer: we had variety of Oysters. Oh, I heart oysters =)

And poached salmon with salad.

I had the Croque Madame w/ Black Truffle Pomme Frites.

The Croque Madame was oozing with goodness. And the Truffle Pomme Frites, to die for.

Dad had the Truite aux Topinambours [pan-roasted trout with roasted sunchokes, marinated mushrooms, toasted almond & beurre noisette]

This was delicious.

Mother had the poached Salmon w/ beets.

And Rej had the (pictured above the Salmon) Poulet Roti [roasted chicken with crispy spatzle, winter squash, chestnuts & white wine poached pears with whole grain mustard jus].

I liked it, but he wasn't into it =/ Oh well...

This is Rej's Mousse au Chocolat Noir.

It was rich, creamy, and chocolaty.

Divine...

I opted for a cup of coffee.

it was a lovely way to spend the first day of 2010.

That Little Mexican Place.

After a crazy party Friday we needed something that would guide us towards a gentle recovery so to say. We headed to That Little Mexican Place in North Perth and let them take care of it for us. And I must say that it was the completely right decision to make as they showered us with two plates full of joy and hot Mexican coffee. Yum yum we then said, wiped our greasy fingers and left to spend the rest of the weekend on the beach surfing. In a bikini! A triple yey for summer.

I was close to a melt down today. No. Literally. It has been forty degrees here for the last two days and the AC in my car is not working like it should. As in blowing icy air on my face. What it does is rather the opposite. No fun kiddies I can tell you that. And just to make things a tad worse for wear I have been taking care of some errand for the whole day of today which means that the hot car and I have been joint by the hip. Oh boy what I wouldn't give for a cool breeze at the moment. What's that I hear? AC in the house? Nah. Not my house either. Oh boy oh boy. Come and scrape my melted remains off this floor of mine.

New Year New Adventures.

I have yet to summarize my Old Year, create new promises, try and keep them and worry about the fact that the noughties are over. The New Year is already here and it is knocking on the door so hard that I can't turn away and pretend I did not hear it. So I welcome it with open arms, offer some wine and make myself comfortable hoping that this meeting shall be a good one. You and me New Year. You and me. Let's make it happen! Let us make this one a combination of learning, understanding, loving, giving, hoping, traveling, forgiving, letting go and finding new. What do you say, are you with me?

When she is gone the bed feels cold and empty.

Now she is gone. My baby sister who is no longer a baby but who to me will always be one. The one who stayed with me through this Christmas smoldering me with love and laughter. The house now feels empty and the bed is cold. No more of her laughter echoing in this house that is more like a room. No more her.
I comfort myself with strawberry milk and Anna Gavalda hoping that she would soon return.
